A Shy New Visitor

by admin - 23:11 on 30 May 2010

The evidence grows that at least two pine martens visit the garden of The Rural Retreat.

Mustelid activity was noticed around 9.45pm; I approached the window with my usual caution, despite experience telling me that martens don't care who watches them eat,

But this one did. As soon as he saw me he scurried along the top of the gate into the shelter of the bushes. He peered out for a moment, giving me hope he'd return to his supper, then disappeared. Very frustrating, especially as it was still reasonably light.

Marten 11

I managed one snap – not enough to compare his bib with other pictures, but the unusual behaviour convinces me that this is a marten we've not seen before. Observations will continue.
