A Tough Day for the Top Cat

by admin - 22:31 on 17 March 2010

Bess has been the alpha female inside The Rural Retreat for many years. Today she proved that she's Top Cat on the outside too.

After she'd spent a frustration-filled morning pleading with Matchgirl to go outside with her for a walk (I was unavailable, trapped at GNoME HQ), the moggy at last got her way, only to be faced by roaming Romeo when she stepped through the doorway.

The intruder, stared into submission, slunk away, allowing Bess and Matchgirl to set off on their healthy exercise.

But barely a minute later the irrepressible Romeo popped up again, halfway down the drive, eager to join the action. Bess was having none of it. She unleashed her stare – once again our downcast neighbour adopted a submissive posture then crept into the undergrowth.

Bess is the boss. The garden is hers.

Beyond the garden is another matter. At the end of the drive the two walkers turned into the lane  where at the end they espied a distant tractor. This was too much for Bess. She turned around and stomped back to her basket. Some days it's best to stay in bed.

Band Update: Blog-followers adept at reading between the lines will be unsurprised that Gordon and the rest of Monkey Bones have parted company because of a lack of progress. We have a possible replacement in the wings; if he fails the audition it's back to square one. There's no business like show business.
