Just Another Week

by Russell Turner - 21:42 on 10 May 2023

That’s another week done, highlights including a forest run during which I didn’t see a single person but did glimpse a roe deer; the run before that featured two hares. A bonus was a garden badger captured last night on trail camera. Black Isle wildlife abounds.

Week 12’s penultimate run was the big one – 20k (which turned out to be 22.5) and 277m of climb on a warm day. In places it was tough going but all went well, even if I did have trouble climbing out of a post-run bath. It is quite deep. My Tailwind was well judged; I’ll have to try additional energy foods when the runs grow longer. Mini pork pies are good, I’ve read, and Hula Hoops and chocolate although I suspect savoury snacks will suit me better. Ultra running is just a long party.

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel with the next day’s run. As it turned out, it felt fine. Keeping it flat helped, as did reducing it from 10k to 7.5. After all, I’d run the extra 2.5k yesterday. Next week’s long runs are 20k and 15k on consecutive days, so the challenge continues. The following week’s step back will be welcome.

Big news from the running world today was that a world record 578,374 people have entered the ballot for next year’s London Marathon. The odds of me getting a place have lengthened. But you never know.
