Counting The Days

by Russell Turner - 15:36 on 29 March 2022

Just five days to go until the London Landmarks Half Marathon. My walks have continued and, along with Mr Physio’s exercises, seem to be aiding recovery. My hurty heel is less hurty every day. I suspect there’ll still be a slight grumble on Sunday, but all seems well for a respectable finish time and a run that’s memorable for the right reasons.

If I am in decent shape, I might be the exception. A recent post on the support group’s Facebook page, in which a runner who’d strained her back asked if other participants had suffered an injury, prompted an outpouring of woe which featured tales of poorly joints, muscles, tendons and limbs, plus a variety of illnesses suffered or continuing, many Covid-related.

Around 16,000 people will take part on Sunday; by the sound of it, at least half will be walking some or all of the route.

If that’s the case, decent weather will be helpful. The forecast remains cool but dry and slightly breezy, which would be ideal. Today’s fitness walk was less clement: cold, especially when the breeze found unsheltered spots, and drizzly. A pause to admire the local lambs was consolation.

The race organisers are ramping up the excitement with a teaser video of a Beefeater holding a box allegedly containing this year’s medal. All will be revealed at 6pm tomorrow. If it’s not the Tower of London I’ll be disappointed.
