The Return Of The Runner

by Russell Turner - 16:23 on 21 March 2022

Today was the day I’d earmarked, all being well, for my return to running. Surprisingly, the sun shone out of a blue sky and there was barely a breath of wind. Despite that, the temperature was a little on the low side but you can’t have everything.

I was taking no chances so, rather than run straight out of the house (which is my usual, probably unwise, preference) I walked downhill for a few minutes until the road became flat then tried running at a cautious pace. A few twinges were immediately manifest but not serious enough to stop me. I pressed on.

Two running miles was my target. The twinges settled down to a background of occasional slight grumbles that could have been either Hurty Heel Syndrome or simply feet shocked at picking up the pace following two lazy weeks of no more than walking. In the end I ran three miles, then finished with a shorter cool-down walk. The feet felt fine.

A few hours later, they’re only slightly sore, so prospects for a respectable showing at London Landmarks are good. No running is planned for tomorrow, although a walk might happen. We’ll see – I’m still taking recovery slowly.

The half marathon, now less than two weeks away, came a little closer today when my race number dropped through the letterbox. All I have to do now, assuming my hurty heel recovers enough, is dodge the Covid that’s rampaging through the UK. City Limits gigs last Thursday, tonight and Saturday won’t make that any easier. Time will tell.
