And Then There Was One?

by Russell Turner - 18:48 on 13 September 2018

Ten years ago today, Matchgirl and I were married at swish Inverness boutique hotel Rocpool Reserve. So it’s a shame she’s consorting with the Vikings again and we’re unable to celebrate until Sunday. However, this did mean I had plenty of time for today’s penultimate long run, although this may turn out not to be A Good Thing.

It was cool (which doesn’t bother me) and windy (which does) and featured some horrible headwinds. Fortunately, the shower that began when I took my first running step (really) didn’t last. Unlike the wind. Maybe it was battling the gusts that led to the twinge in my thigh, which I felt at 9-10 miles, but I plodded on until a natural break at 2:30 and 12.6 miles, just 3.4 short of today’s target.

Last week, when I split my long run into two because of wind and rain, I’d expected Matchgirl to call me a wuss and tell me to man up. Instead, she said a two-part long run was perfectly acceptable, so I had fewer qualms about finishing early and continuing the run in the afternoon.

But after cooling down, having some lunch, and allowing time for digestion, when I began my indoor warm-up it became apparent after mere seconds that I wouldn’t be running again today. The twinge isn’t painful, and walking is no problem, but my thigh’s sore when I try a running action. Hmm…

Anatomy specialists Matchgirl and Triathlon Cathy can probably pinpoint the affected part; the best I can say is that it’s on the right side of my right thigh, near the bottom, and feels more tendony than muscley. With luck it will be gone tomorrow, or before Monday when my next run is scheduled, but I’ve left a message with Adam the Physio enquiring about any appointment times he has available next week.

Tomorrow is exactly one month until t’ Yorkshire Marathon. Will I be on the start line or the sidelines? Time will tell.
