A Day Of Recovery

by Russell Turner - 20:46 on 16 July 2018

Today should have seen me running 10 happy miles without even a minute of walking. But plans are for changing.

A late finish at Elgin Golf Club on Friday night, where City Limits was the post-competition entertainment, followed by an even later finish at a Saturday wedding on Orkney, sandwiched by two 150-mile car journeys, two ferries and sundry smaller car trips, meant that today was reserved for continuing rest and recovery (and work on a brochure I’m producing because I still have a living to make outside of music).

Although hectic, the weekend was worth the effort. I now know that Orkney rhubarb gin is the best in the world – not that I was able to taste any, being a responsible driver and the wedding venue being 26 miles from where we’d been put up by the mother-of-the-groom. The glowing review came from singer Jenna, whose enjoyment was made complete by the keen attentions of the groom’s brother. An invitation to a post-gig through-the-night party was declined with reluctance because ferries, long journeys and hangovers don’t mix. She’s really not got the hang of the rock and roll lifestyle.

I also now know how a traditional wedding Grand March is performed. Very entertaining. I suspect we’ll be invited back soon.

So my biggest challenge so far – a full 10-mile run – will be faced tomorrow in reasonable temperatures (around 16ºC), a light breeze and, if the Met Office is right, with little chance of rain. What could possibly go wrong?
