The Breakfast Of Champions

by Russell Turner - 15:46 on 03 April 2018

Eighteen days to go and the snow has returned. Fortunately it’s more sleety here; further afield there’ve been some proper falls. Even more fortunately (unlike poor Matchgirl) I wasn’t scheduled to run today; tomorrow, when the forecast is only marginally better for a 50-minute trot, is another matter.

Despite that, I’ll get out if I can because conditions on Friday – final long run day – are predicted to be decent and a gig on Saturday means that running in the morning is a definite no-no. Trying on Sunday might be too much of an effort too. The only alternative is to do the long run on Thursday and the trot at the weekend. We’ll see.

Some forward planning took place today: the purchase of enough Torq energy gels and Clif ShokBloks to see me through the long run and the marathon itself. A snip at £23. The costs continue to mount.

But there’s good news too. My runs have invariably followed a breakfast of cereal, lately with added berries. Matchgirl now tells me I should eat more before a long run. I’d assumed that stuffing yourself would be contra-indicated but everyone’s different, her ultra coach confirms. So the next couple of running breakfasts will also feature toast and banana. If my stomach can cope with it, and the new menu adds extra energy, my prospects of London Marathon glory will be hugely enhanced.
