Fright Night In Portree

by Russell Turner - 16:48 on 30 October 2016

People on Skye know how to enjoy themselves – both residents and visitors. City Limits Lite’s gig at the Portree Hotel got off to a polite start, with only occasional applause and interest from members of an audience more bothered about drink and gossip, but by the end of the night the dancers were grooving and much singing-along was taking place.

Sweet Child Of Mine wasn’t on the set list, because Keith can’t hit the high notes, but we did it anyway at the insistence of a gang of lads who promised they’d sing the chorus. They did, as did others, and as usual it was one of the evening’s high points. Others included a very silly version of Proud Mary, which got faster and faster (and will stay that way in the future), and Led Zep’s Rock and Roll which started fast and remained so.

Much of the crowd (especially the female section) was dressed in blood-spattered, tight-fitting, Halloween garb – or maybe that’s just the new Skye fashion. Anything is possible.

Afterwards, praise from bar staff ringing in our ears, we (and especially Sam) were assailed by an increasingly drunk Danish student, over-keen for us to perform in Aberdeen, but as she refused to believe I was more than forty-five I was willing to tolerate the inconvenience. Thirty-year-old Keith, whom she estimated to be thirty-five, was less impressed.

We shook her off by packing the van then returning to the hotel for free drink before ascending to our complementary rooms for the night. Breakfast this morning was great, and the pre-gig tradition of curry at the Taste Of India is now fully established. That’s a proper gig.

Then home to catch up on Strictly where Greg and Ed shone, even if they were both at the wrong end of the leader board. We’ve found our favourites.
