The Running Woman

by Russell Turner - 18:40 on 25 September 2016

The Running Queen’s big day went well, which is fortunate as otherwise The Rural Retreat would be filled with gloom tonight.

Matchgirl’s record-breaking marathon was completed in four hours and forty-nine minutes – a time she’s willing to share with the world (and much better than her London Marathon effort). She could have done better, of course. There’s been a small amount of chuntering about some of the occasions she walked instead of ran but on the whole she’s pleased with the result.

Her time even included a period in which she gave Brownlee-style support to a fellow runner who was close to giving up. What a star.

The Retreat now echoes to the sound of Matchgirl’s groans every time she has to bend or reach. Despite that, she’s happy enough to allow a rare picture – snapped by me moments before she crossed the finish line.
