Marathon Matchgirl's Quiet Night In

by Russell Turner - 17:41 on 24 September 2016

Matchgirl runs the Loch Ness Marathon tomorrow, so it’s no surprise that there’s been some last-minute drama.

This, amazingly, doesn’t involve health and fitness, for The Athlete is free from all ailments and – even better – her legs and associated muscles are in perfect condition following a successful training regime and the unaccustomed luxury of a week-long taper (that’s sporty-speak for a week off). This is unheard-of pre-race preparation by The Running Queen.

The drama involved her night-before accommodation, which was sorted out several weeks ago and included a lift to the start of The Big Run. A check this morning revealed that not only was porridge absent from the breakfast menu (a vital foodstuff for serious runners), but the promised lift was also no longer available. As this would mean a four-mile walk to the start line, her stopover has been cancelled and instead I’ll be called upon to drive her into town at 6.15am.

I’ll return in the afternoon to see Matchgirl across the finish line and bring her and her medal home. A record marathon time is guaranteed.

The change of plan means that we can watch the second part of Strictly Come Dancing together and she’ll be able to choose who to hate this year (my money’s on Laura Whitmore or Danny Mac). As for me, I’ve not yet decided who’ll get my support (it was so easy when Cherie Lunghi took part) but early possibles are Judge Rinder, Will Young and Anastacia.
