A Snappery Record

by admin - 19:54 on 23 May 2015

Cathy will be impressed. Not only did I fill a 4GB memory card in one day of snappery –  a feat never before achieved, even in Namibia – I also filled a third of the next card. That's well over 400 RAW images at today's Highland Wool Festival.

Many are duplicate (and triplicate) safety shots of stallholders, to insure against blur and blinking, and some are reference shots, but it still leaves a lot of sifting and processing to do. Fortunately the organisers need only a couple immediately; the rest can wait a few days. That's just as well as I'll soon be heading to Inverness for tonight's Strays gig and tomorrow will involve putting the final touches to Chatterbox.

The festival (which is more of a fair for yarn-spinners, garment-makers and associated craftspeople; not a sheep was to be seen) was entertaining enough to keep me interested all day. Matchgirl would have spent oodles, so it's as well she had a long run to complete ahead of our imminent trip to the Lake District where she's to do her first serious fell running. It takes all sorts.

Nobody refused to have their picture taken – a few were delighted – but I'd have gone home rich if I had a pound for every woman who said: "You don't need me in the picture. I always look terrible in photographs" or words to that effect. More galling was the number of people who said: "You'll send me the pictures for my website, won't you" – even the ones under the impression I was a professional with a living to earn.

People wouldn't have expected free prints in the pre-digital age, but now everyone (it seems) has a camera in their pocket the skill's been so devalued. Photographs are just another throwaway commodity. However, as I was snapping for free, maybe I'm no better.
