Butterflies And Bands

by admin - 20:37 on 21 July 2014

As it's a while since I've attempted to add to my small butterfly collection, and today enjoyed what's forecast to be a longish spell of decent weather, this afternoon seemed as good a time as any to rectify that.

Several species zipped around the lane, too fast for certain identification, but one did settle long enough for me to point the Pentax and immortalise it in pixels. It's a ringlet, according to the leaflet I rely on for information.

The snap's not as crisp is it should be because I neglected to set the depth of field correctly, the result being too shallow. However, it's good enough for the collection. I'll persevere this week even though The Rural Retreat's buddleia seems to be the only one for miles around that's not flowered. Maybe it will blossom late and be the only one left for nectar-hungry visitors.

Speaking of visitors, a marten leapt on to the garden gate at eight-thirty last night in perfect light. As food was not yet out she stayed only seconds before leaving disappointed. I didn't have the camera prepared any way – another opportunity missed.

Music Update: I'm definitely jinxed: The Deeds, the band for which I hoped to get a few gigs as stand-in bassist, has folded. Two gigs were scratched last weekend, as have two this weekend. Fortunately, Jim's back from his oil rig on Friday and band holidays are over. The Strays should be back in action soon.
