All Set For The Sun

by admin - 16:24 on 30 January 2014

2014 continues grey, damp and uninspiring, but I don't care – three weeks today I'll accompany Matchgirl to the (hopefully) sun-kissed island of Malta where she'll run (but not compete; the cautious athlete is saving that for Iceland or Aviemore) in the half marathon from Mdina to Sliema.

I'll be there to carry bags and offer encouragement to Marathon Matchgirl, who this weekend will brave monsoon and icy wind to complete an eleven-mile training run. It takes all sorts. With luck, our Mediterranean break will have the side-effect of rejuvenating my dormant snappery with good weather and new scenery. We'll see.

The only new scenery around The Rural Retreat is a severe outbreak of snowdrops which erupted over the weekend. Primroses are showing signs of life (much later than last year, surprisingly) and buds have appeared on several trees. Spring is almost here.

Snowdrops

But we've still got February to get through. Matchgirl, who's desperate for some white stuff, knows the blizzards will bite when we're away and she's not here to see it, so put the 20th to 25th in your diaries.

I will take lots of pictures for her if it does. Though I hope it won't.

Matchgirl is certainly made of much sterner stuff than I am!
