Snow and a Mystery Marten

by admin - 22:48 on 09 March 2011

The weather forecast was correct – we awoke this morning to find the garden covered in snow. We'll have to wait a bit longer for spring.

It had cleared by the time I returned from GNoME HQ, much to the relief of Bess. This morning, Romeo had been seen throwing himself into the snow with youthful abandon but our cat prefers warm paws. She doesn't know that worse is forecast for tomorrow. Poor puss.

Neither Master Marten nor Miss Marten have been spotted for a couple of days but mustelid treats have not been wasted; Mystery Marten has seen to that.

Our new (as far as we know) visitor is adult but petite, leading us to believe it's female. Like every other marten we've encountered she's agile, inquisitive and unconcerned by two people and a cat gawping at her through a window.

The BBC's Springwatch website has appealed for people with interesting garden wildlife to let them know, so full details of our hungry visitors have been sent. I'm sure that Kate, Chris, Bill and Simon will soon be at the door, eager to stakeout The Nutella Tree then with the aid of infrared night-time cameras follow martens around their territories and back to their secret hideaways.

I'll let you know if I receive a reply. Unless we have to keep it secret. In the meantime, here's another video of the Achnashellach martens I found on YouTube. Who can resist a marten?
