A Garden Drama

by admin - 22:39 on 14 July 2010

As predicted, ninja pine martens called under cover of darkness to clear the garden gate and The Nutella Tree of free food.

We didn't catch sight of one today until 10pm when the light was too poor to get photographic proof, so Matchgirl and I were able to watch Master Marten – for it was he – without thought of exposure and shutter speed while he hoovered up nuts and Nutella and ate his egg.

He knew I was unable to snap, for when he'd had his fill at the gate he ran up The Nutella Tree to look for more.

This was too much for Bess, who'd been waiting by her cat-flap. Impatient for us to let her out, she made use of the flap herself and ambled across the lawn – much to Matchgirl's horror – in the general direction of the treed marten.

The selfless heroine was ready to rush out and rescue her pet from the jaws of the ravenous wild beast, but martens are even more cautious than cats: Master Marten jumped out of the tree and scampered into the undergrowth.

Someone had a close escape. I don't know who.
